My Poor Jai.................

Yesterday was a typical day. Had a friend over for coffee in the morning, my dad popped in, then I got started on some housework and got Jai his lunch.

Then it was time for Jai's nap time, but he was refusing his sleep (a recent often occurance unfortunately), but happy to stay in bed while I decided to finish sewing up Jordan's school pants. Jai was then very cranky all afternoon due to being so tired, he was finally happy playing in Jordan's room while I cooked dinner. Steve came home, asked where the boys were, I told him in Jordan's room and then we heard that awful thud of a child that had fallen, silence then screaming. Steve beat me there to pick a very bloody Jai off Jordan's floor, we quickly realised he had fallen off of Jordan's bunk bed. It's one of those bunk beds with a desk underneath instead of another bed. Steve panics, so I scooped Jai up and dash into the bathroom quickly soaking a cold wet flannel trying to find out where on his face all this blood was coming form. Found out it was both nose and mouth. Got that kind of manageable and bundled him off in the car to the emergency department. I was fine until I got there and had to tell what happened, by then the tears are streaming down my face, I have this limp asleep little boy - hard to know whether from being so tired or such a huge fall and then I'm waiting for the dr imaging all sorts of bad things that are wrong with him, unable to stop crying.

They saw me quite quickly luckily and checked Jai out. His right arm was red near his wrist and he kept saying it was sore, but the dr checked it and said that he didn't think it was broken. I asked if he should do an xray to check, but he said that if it was broken Jai would be in more pain. So in the end they decide to admit him for the standard 4 hours of observation to see if he had a head injury.

Left there at 11pm and promptly set up a mattress on Jai's floor so I could listen to his breathing all night. Spoke to Steve and said I was still taking him to our GP for a check up. Jai got up this morning and was still saying his arm was sore. Our GP saw us first thing, sent us for an xray and yes, it is fractured! So he rang the hospital and told us we were coming in to have a cast put on.

Got to the hospital and for some stupid reason still had to wait another 2 hours to be seen by one of their drs on duty who would then organise someone else to put on the cast. The person then starts to apply it all the way up his arm. My poor little boy can't even bend his arm! I told him that my dr said it would only be a small one, but he says no the higher up the better. Jai was so good, he kept so still, my brave boy! The cast seemed so heavy, but I was told that as it dried it would get a little bit lighter. I still had my doubts that they had done it right, so when I got home, picked up Jordan, I then took him back to my GP for him to check that it was all ok (I just didn't trust them anymore!) Luckily it is all ok and hopefully will only have to be on for 3 - 4 weeks. I'm so angry that they just didn't do the xray last night! The poor little boy has been in pain and has now had to spend a whole day traveling from drs to xray departments to hospital, when he should've been home having cuddles with me!

I just can't believe how lucky he is to have only that quite minor injury. I still have "what if" visions of him lying there with a broken back or a broken neck - and of course I am totally blaming myself, if I had cooked dinner earlier, he wouldn't have been up there at that time, if I was watching him better, if .... if....... if...................

So poor Jordan is a little upset as I have told him that I am now too scared of something similar happening again and to be on the safe side we are going to dismantle his new bunk bed, wrap it up nicely and store it in the garage for a few more years yet. I'm hoping that the reality of shopping for a new bed and new desk will help cheer him up.

As for Jai, there will be pretty much a whole weekend of cuddles, treats, snuggling while watching some of his favourite dvds and generally keeping him in my sight as ALL TIMES!!!!

Poor Jai, and poor you natalie. The stress is so awful when these things happen, but I am sure Jai will be back to his happy self in no time. Little peoples bones heal very quickly, much quicker than mothers nerves I am afraid.
I hope Jordon likes his new bed.

Oh what a brave boy. What a terrible thing at the hospital. I am guessing modbury?? I had a fractured wrist when i was 16 not diagnosed by them...resulted in plaster for 3 months, an op, more plaster, another op, more plaster. Total for plaster and ops were 18months. There are jokes around about me having a bionic wrist!! BUT i blame the hospital - that one is SHOCKING for misdiagnoses

Oh no! Poor Jai. Don't blame yourself Natalie, the boys are so quick that you could have been in the next room and it could have happened. Good luck over the next few weeks....I know I shed a few tears last year when I fractured my ankle. It is just so frustrating.

Awww, poor little guy! I hope he has a speedy recovery. I hope you are ok too Natalie. I know just how much us Mum's can blame ourselves at times like this. Please don't be too hard on yourself..

Poor little man and poor Mum. Can't imagine quite what it feels like, but hope that Jai "bounces back" real soon.

Oh MY!!! What a terrible day. Best wishes and cuddles for Jai, and a big hug for you too. It is so not your fault - you thought they were safe playing in the bedroom, and someone has to make them dinner. Unfortunately, part of kids learning means that sometimes they have accidents, and sometimes they are quite nasty ones like poor Jai's run in with the bunk bed. We can only do our best to try and prevent them, but we can't be evrywhere at once. Take it easy on yourself. Hugs to Jordan too for being a good boy and giving up his bunk bed for a little while to protect his brother.

oh natalie, what an awful time you have had! hope jai is on the mend. little ones get up to such mischief, don't they? and it's impossible to be eveywhere at once! they can have accients when you are standing right next to them! my nephew fell off a stool when he was about 5 and knocked half of his teeth out... the doctors couldn't guarantee they would grow back because it was hard to tell whether the nerves had been damaged. anyway, luckily, they did grow back - but only recently - he's turning 10 soon!

Oh Natalie! What an awful experience - not to mention the treatment (or lack of) at the hospital. Kudos to you for following your instincts. Snuggles to Jai. x
